Dr. Layne Hunt is a professor at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he teaches graduate courses in Education Administration and Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Hunt is well liked by his students and respected by his peers. Dr. Hunt has over 20 years worth of experience in the field of education. Hunt has been in administration since 1996, when he became the Assistant Principal of Mary D. Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin; in which he made dramatic improvements in the areas of student attendance and student behavior. Hunt was recognized by the district’s Superintendent for his achievement with student attendance. After serving as a successful administrator for a number of schools, Hunt achieved some of his most outstanding accomplishments in Monroe, Michigan at Monroe High School. Layne Hunt was the first African American principal in the School’s history, which spanned over 100 years. Dr. Hunt made substantial improvements to the learning environment for all students. During his time at Monroe High School Mr. Hunt obtained his doctorate degree and was one of only two administrators in the district who held this advance degree. While at Monroe High School, Dr. Hunt increased the graduation rate by 20 percent, improved the attendance rate and decreased the number of discipline infractions. For its academic efforts and outstanding performance on state standardized tests, Monroe High School was awarded the Governor’s Cup for two consecutive years under Dr. Hunt’s leadership. The Governor’s Cup recognizes academic excellence and achievement on the Michigan state assessment test. Dr. Hunt increased parent participation by parents who felt disenfranchised from Monroe High School. After leaving Monroe, Dr. Hunt moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan to help establish a newly formed middle school that needed to demonstrate stability and academic progress. While serving as the Head Principal of Fairplain Renaissance Middle School, Dr. Hunt was heavily recruited by the Superintendent of Ypsilanti Public Schools in Ypsilanti, Michigan to serve as their high school Principal. According to Central Administration and many of the staff at Ypsilanti High School the school had been without effective leadership for several years. Dr. Hunt was recruited to make systemic changes to the organization which included increasing the academic achievement and participation of the majority of students who were African American. These changes were initially implemented, but the political will of a few board members prevailed and Dr. Hunt decided that he could not be effective serving the children and their families. Dr. Hunt left Ypsilanti to the great disappointment of the staff, parents, and many community leaders. Hunt had a tremendous impact in the short time he was there by increasing academic expectations of students and staff accountability. Dr. Hunt has the reputation of being an effective agent of change who has the courage and passion to do what is best for students regardless of the cost or inconvenience to himself. Hunt’s accomplishments over one year are extremely impressive. In addition to making substantial esthetic improvements to the school grounds (collegiate flags throughout the building, more emphasis on improving and maintaining the grounds, etc), Hunt also went a long way toward eliminating the improper influence of a select few who were motivated by personal gain over the best interest of students. Some board members were guilty of unethical behavior which was possibly illegal and distracted the progress being made at the school. Both parents and teachers alike were unhappy to see Hunt leave. Most of all, students were overwhelmingly supportive of the opportunities Dr. Hunt made possible. Dr. Hunt now teaches graduate courses at Concordia University. Dr. Hunt has been given many awards and accolades throughout his career including: Teacher of the Year 1990, All American Scholar 1992, Teacher of the Month (October) 1999 and finally five different year nominations to Who’s Who Among American Teachers. Dr. Hunt was also twice nominated for Who’s Who Among Professional Educators. Dr. Hunt describes himself as a passionate lifelong learner who is always eager to attend workshops and staff development opportunities. He has been inspiring young people all his life and will continue to do so.
